The new world view
The new world view, in which authentic leadership resides, holds that the taken-for-granted truths of the old world view (for example 'A leader always needs to be strong' ) may well now be open to scrutiny.
It invites us to challenge what we know and how we came to know it. It allows us to explore what we don't know and discover what we didn't know we didn't know. It suggests that individual, personal ways of understanding are always derived from looking at the world from our own subjective perspective.
These perspectives could equally be influenced by cultural, historical or personal experience. Leadership itself has been seen in different ways over the centuries and in different contexts; divine right, meritocracy, physical strength, wealth and social class have all been used to justify a leader's position.
Authentic leadership is totally grounded in the new world view, informed by the new sciences, reached through dialogue and putting human values first and recognising the fundamental significance of communication and relationship.
These are the leaders, for whom uncertainty holds no fear. They will lead us into the uncertain future.
